This website, emdashrights.org, is published and maintained under the name Em Dash Rights.
Em Dash Rights is not a government agency, regulator, court, educational institution, university, employer, union, political party or law firm.
References to organisations, institutions, companies or individuals on this website do not imply affiliation with or endorsement by them unless expressly stated.
Our purpose
Em Dash Rights is a civic and editorial project concerned with the treatment of human writing in the age of generative AI.
The site may include:
- the Em Dash Rights Declaration;
- public endorsements;
- submitted experiences and case records;
- editorial commentary;
- institutional policies or responses;
- research and reference material; and
- records of changes in institutional practice.
The archive exists to document experiences and patterns, not to determine legal liability, academic misconduct or authorship.

Information is published for advocacy, editorial, research and informational purposes.

The Declaration
The Em Dash Rights Declaration expresses principles advocated by this initiative.
Signing the Declaration records support for those principles.
A signature does not:
- establish whether a particular piece of writing was written by a human or generated using artificial intelligence;
- determine whether an accusation or institutional decision was correct;
- certify the facts of an individual case;
- bind a school, university, employer, regulator or other third party; or
- create a contractual relationship with Em Dash Rights.
Where available, signers may choose whether their name or other identifying information is displayed publicly.
Submitted stories and case material
Em Dash Rights may receive personal accounts, documents, evidence, correspondence and other material from contributors.
Submission does not guarantee publication.
We may decline, edit, shorten, fact-check, anonymise, contextualise, restrict or remove submitted material where we consider that appropriate.
Where editing occurs, we will not intentionally alter the substantive meaning of a contributor’s account.
Some published cases may include statements, opinions or allegations supplied by contributors. Publication does not necessarily mean that every statement has been independently established as fact.
Where a submission concerns an identifiable person or organisation, we may request supporting material or additional context before publication.
We may remove names and other identifying details where they are unnecessary to understanding the case.
Contributors should not submit confidential information, private records, personal information about another person, or material that they do not have permission or a lawful basis to provide.
Submitted material is also governed by our Terms of Use, Privacy Policy and Community Guidelines.
Editorial independence
Publication decisions are made independently by Em Dash Rights.
No person has a right to publication merely because material has been submitted.
We may decide not to publish material even where it falls within the general scope of the project.
We may update, annotate, correct, anonymise, archive or remove previously published material where new information or other circumstances justify review.
Organisational endorsements may be verified before publication.
An endorsement made in the name of an organisation must come from, or be confirmed by, someone reasonably authorised to represent that organisation.
Accuracy and corrections
We aim to describe published material accurately, fairly and in appropriate context.
If you believe material on this website:
- contains a material factual error;
- incorrectly identifies you;
- misrepresents your position;
- infringes your privacy or confidentiality;
- is defamatory;
- infringes intellectual property rights; or
- otherwise requires legal or editorial review,
you may contact us at legal@emdashrights.org.
Please identify, where possible:
- the relevant page or URL;
- the specific material concerned;
- the reason for your concern;
- any supporting information; and
- the correction, clarification, anonymisation, removal or other outcome you are requesting.
We may contact you for further information before making a decision.
Depending on the circumstances, we may correct, clarify, annotate, anonymise, restrict access to or remove material.
Submitting a complaint does not automatically require removal of the material.
Privacy
Our Privacy Policy explains how Em Dash Rights handles personal information associated with:
- Declaration signatures;
- story and case submissions;
- organisational endorsements;
- correspondence;
- website usage;
- analytics and technical logs; and
- requests for correction, access or deletion.
Where applicable, personal information is handled in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles.
Information supplied privately is not automatically treated as information authorised for public display.
Consent to submit information is separate from consent to publish a person’s name, institution, documents or other identifying information.

Unless permission is expressly stated, those materials remain protected by copyright.
Nothing on this website gives another person or organisation the right to impersonate Em Dash Rights or present themselves as an official representative of the initiative.
Submitted content licence
Where you submit material for possible publication, any rights granted to Em Dash Rights are governed by the Terms of Use.
Submitting material does not transfer ownership of your copyright to Em Dash Rights unless expressly agreed otherwise.
Where publication is authorised, Em Dash Rights may require sufficient permission to reproduce, edit, format, anonymise, archive and display the material as reasonably necessary to operate the project.
Third-party material
This website may quote, reference, embed or link to material published by third parties.
Third-party material remains the responsibility of its respective publisher or rights holder.
